Forsyth County Detention Center

Forsyth County Law Enforcement and Detention Center
Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Sutton-Kennerly & Associates was responsible for the structural design of a new 375,000 sq .ft. detention center located in downtown Winston-Salem.  The building consists of twin 11-story towers constructed of cast-in-place reinforced concrete supported on a driven concrete pile foundation system.

Greensboro, North Carolina
SKA provided engineering design services for a 600 ton central chilled water plant renovation.  The project included replacement of two chillers, all pumps, and major piping with new energy-efficient equipment and controls.  The plant includes a heat exchanger for winter cooling with cooling towers.  The work on this project was accomplished while keeping the 180,000 square foot government facility occupied and operational.


Female Boot Camp North Carolina Department of Commerce
Hoffman, North Carolina

SKA was responsible for structural and mechanical/electrical/plumbing engineering for a new 60-bed dormitory for female inmates, food service facility and laundry facility at Impact Youth Center located in Hoffman, North Carolina.  Project included gas piping, electrical power applications design, ventilation, make-up air, hood ventilation and control requirements.


Guilford County Governmental Complex
High Point, North Carolina

SKA was responsible for the structural engineering design of a four-story courthouse building, a multi-story detention center, and a parking deck for the Guilford County Governmental Complex in High Point, North Carolina.  The structures were constructed from cast-in-place reinforced concrete beams, joists, and slabs.  The buildings were supported on deep drilled pier foundations

Brown Creek Correctional Institute
Anson County, North Carolina

SKA provided structural and electrical engineering design services for a new 34,000 square foot, 208 bed dormitory building and a new 4,000 square foot program support building.  The dormitory building is constructed from masonry bearing walls and precast concrete framing supported on shallow foundations with a precast concrete plank roof structure.  The program support building is constructed from masonry bearing walls supported on shallow foundations with a steel joist and steel deck roof structure.  SKA also provided design and construction administration services for electrical systems, security, technology infrastructure and fire alarm systems.


Eastern Processing Center
Vanceboro, North Carolina

SKA was responsible for the structural design of a four-building complex consisting of two dormitory buildings, one close custody housing unit, and one administrative/service building, wth total square footage of 180,000. All buildings are constructed primarily from masonry bearing walls and interior steel columns supported on shallow foundations, with steel beam, joist, and steel deck roof framing systems.  Mezzanines in the housing units are constructed from cast-in-place reinforced concrete.  Cells are constructed from reinforced concrete masonry.


Alamance County Jail and Sheriff's Department
Graham, North Carolina

SKA was responsible for the primary structural design for a new 60,000 sq. ft., four story,  cast-in-place reinforced concrete building to house both the jail and Sheriff's Department.  The building is supported on a drilled pier foundation system.


Virginia Correctional Center for Women
Goochland, Virginia

SKA was responsible for the conversion of 50‑year old 20,000 PPH coal‑firedspreader stoker/boiler to 15,000 PPH underfeed stoker operation, plus additional plant improvements, including controls, tube replacement, etc.


Augusta Correctional Center
Craigsville, Virginia

SKA provided engineering, design and construction administration for improvements to particulate emissions and opacity at the central boiler plant.  Included are new controls and instrumentation, an 80-ft. free-standing stack, modifications to overfire air systems and miscellaneous associated work.  SKA also performed ASME 4‑hour, Short‑Form Performance and Acceptance Tests on 3 wood/coal fired boilers.  Each boiler was rated at 11,000 PPH.


Piedmont Correctional Institution
Salisbury, North Carolina

SKA performed a condition survey and evaluation of the brick masonry veneer system on this 13-story building.  Subsequently, SKA provided design and construction administration services for the replacement of the shelf angles, flashing and sealants and repairs to the brick masonry.
