Message From our Founder

SKA's beginning was in 1957 when John Sutton established a one-man structural engineering office in Greensboro, North Carolina.   In 1961, I joined John V. Sutton Engineers as an associate, and in 1965, I became a partner and the firm's name was changed to Sutton-Kennerly & Associates.   Our goal in 1961 was to establish an engineering firm that would provide the highest standards and services to our clients.

Since 1961, SKA has maintained a steady rate of growth.   We now have offices in five (5) cities, four of which are in North Carolina.   The reason for this steady rate of growth is the level of professional services that we have provided to our clients and the qualifications and experience of our engineering staff.

The majority of our engineers begin their career with SKA after graduating from college.   Many have earned a master's degree in engineering and several have earned a Ph.D.   Our philosophy has been to recruit engineers that are in the top of their graduating class from the best engineering schools.   Currently, SKA employs 14 professional engineers (P.E.'s) and engineering interns from John's and my alma mater, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and 14 engineers who graduated from North Carolina State University.

SKA has maintained a small firm atmosphere in a fairly large firm by organizing our staff into specialty groups. Each group is managed by experienced engineers who are shareholders in the firm.   Clients work directly with principals whose primary responsibility is to manage and oversee the project and to see that the client's expectations and our standards and level of service are met.  

Our primary goal on each project is to serve each client to the best of our professional ability, providing economical designs and developing solutions that answer the client's needs and expectations.   In pursuing this goal, we work to determine clients' needs and expectations both now and in the future.   We attempt to make certain that what is done today will fill today's needs and tomorrow's use.
