History

The firm was originated to provide structural engineering services for architects, owners, and contractors. Our services have included the design, investigation, evaluation, and testing of materials and structures of all sizes and types. Sutton-Kennerly & Associates has developed expertise related to all types of construction materials such as steel, concrete, and wood. We also keep abreast of the latest developments in structural systems such as post-tensioned concrete, prestressed concrete, space frames, and thin shells. Our diligence has gained SKA a reputation that we are proud of and strive to maintain.

Over the years, Sutton-Kennerly has expanded its field of services into other aspects of the construction industry including design of industrial and commercial projects: site selection, utilization, and development - parking and traffic control layouts and structures - athletic fields and sports structures - design and evaluation of building and structural components - roofing design, investigation, evaluation, and repair - construction inspection, management, and contract administration.

In 1987, Sutton-Kennerly & Associates added mechanical/electrical services to our in-house capabilities. This was accomplished by acquiring most of the engineering department of a large industrial mechanical contractor. We offer mechanical and electrical engineering services, including steam and power plants, utility distribution, process piping and controls, industrial ventilation, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, plumbing, fire protection, electrical power, controls and lighting and others.

Sutton-Kennerly’s Building Investigation & Diagnostic Services Group conducts comprehensive investigations, failure analyses and condition surveys. We evaluate structural materials and systems as well as waterproofing systems, including roofing, below-grade waterproofing, and flashing systems. We also conduct corrosion surveys, vibration analyses, and load studies. Our I&D engineers work hand in hand with our structural and industrial engineers to provide restoration design and repair of deteriorating building systems.

The average length of service at Sutton-Kennerly for all personnel is eight years, and for the professional staff thirteen years. The average length of service for the principals is twenty-five years.
